With a laid-back, funky charm enhanced by the bookstore one floor below, Explore was dishing up high-quality, mostly organic vegetarian fare long before such concepts as preservative- and pesticide-free became mainstream. Omelets made with free-range eggs are available for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Soups and chowders, sandwiches and a super-fresh salad bar appeal to the light-lunch crowd. We've found satisfaction in the vegan Reuben sandwich, filled with grilled marinated tempeh, organic sauerkraut and a choice of dairy or soy cheese, accompanied by roasted potatoes and a salad of organic field greens. Tofu and other soy products star in many of the main dishes, including meatless burgers, various pastas and a rotating selection of 14 dinner specials such as seitan stroganoff with wild mushrooms, herb-crusted tempeh, portobello mushroom steak and shepherd's pie ringed with organic mashed potatoes. Such desserts as pecan pie or Key lime pie, chocolate espresso mousse cake, chocolate fudge cake and carrot cake (of course) are so rich that no one feels deprived. Of course, fresh fruit and vegetable juices, smoothies and herb teas star among beverage choices; but you can also order fine coffee drinks and beer, wine or Champagne.
