Hard Times Café Description:
Hard Times is a chain of restaurants specializing in chili. They currently serve four types: vegetarian, Texas, Cincinatti and Terlingua Red. They also feature a variety of "bar food" like hamburgers and chicken sandwiches. The atmosphere is that of a Texas bar with country music on the jukebox.
One of the first major chili houses in the area, Hard Times excels at what it does best: Makes power-packed chilis in three different styles---Texas, Cincinnati, and vegetarian. And even among these categories, the kitchen offers choices: with spaghetti, with beans, with cheese, and/or with onions. Our favorite is the tried-and-true Texas chili with coarse-ground meat served with beans, and topped with cheese and onions. Nonchili dishes include sandwiches and salads, but you have to ask, Why bother with these? Responding to America's love for the chili bowl, each café sells pints, quarts, and gallons of chili to go, plus its sweet corn bread. You can also find Hard Times' t-shirts, hot sauces, and spice mixes.
