Long-timer Carlo's Cucina Italiana brings a bit of the North End to Allston, where students jam in among locals to slurp up crowd favorites like pasta puttanesca, lobster ravioli with salmon cream sauce and veal Parmesan. At times, the dishes shine with the pride and love that signify home cooking; at others, however, one senses the kitchen is taking some sloppy shortcuts, though it seems that Carlo's is heading in the right direction once more.
