River Ranch Restaurant makes the most of the Truckee River. Its curved dining room, with a fireplace and friendly bar crowd, overlooks a patch of river rapids. In summer, the deck brims with hungry rafters at the end of their rides, devouring spicy wings, rock shrimp tacos, and portobello mushroom and Gorgonzola sandwiches. White wine broth adds flavor to an enormous polenta square topped with sautéed spinach, heirloom tomatoes and blue cheese; it sounds odd, but it's rich and tasty. Intensely sweet Bing cherries balance earthy slices of elk loin. If you're chilled, try one of the chocolate specialty drinks served in a sherry glass.
