Poggio Description:
Poggio is an elegant restaurant; when the windowed doors along one side of the space are open to Sausalito's main drag, the room seems to spill out onto the sidewalk. Linen-topped tables interspersed with heat lamps and bountiful potted plants make the patio a spiffy place to dine. Inside, arches abound, a large fireplace and wood-burning oven warms the expansive terra cotta and marble space where abundant banquettes hold convivial groups of friends. Tuscany-trained chef Peter McNee is a perfectionist---he and his staff turn out from-scratch pastas and charcuterie. Many ingredients come from the restaurant's own organic garden as well as local organic farms. Ravioli of braised beef tongue is delicate with garden-fresh English peas and mint pesto. Hand-cut pappardelle with Chianti-braised duck, foraged mushrooms and pecorino Toscano is rich and earthy. Pillow-soft ricotta gnocchi are served over beef ragù. A wood-burning oven turns out classic, crisped thin-crust pizza. A dessert of lemon mousse with pistachios and meringue beats out ice cream for refreshing. The menu changes seasonally as well as daily, so expect surprises. The wine list emphasizes vintages from Italy and Northern California; more than two dozen choices are served by the glass or quarto. Cocktails are elevated by specialty artisan liqueurs, such as house-infused Meyer limoncello, as well as limecello and aranciello.
