The Whale & Ale Description:
Victorian pub and restaurant. Oak-paneled throughout with oak staircase to balcony level and piano bar.
Fresh seafood, prime rib and English pub foods, Beef Wellington, fish & chips, shepherd's pie and all the rest. Many tap import beers from northern Europe. Full bar.
The ambience at this San Pedro pub is authentically British, with plenty of oak panels and brass fittings. All that is good and bad about English pub food is on display. Roast lamb, beef and seafood dishes are reliably good, but vegetables are sometimes overcooked and pastry items occasionally suffer from sitting too long. Roasted prime rib comes in small (Anne Boleyn), medium (Whale of a Cut) and large (Henry VIII) portions. Traditional dishes include battered cod and chips and steak and kidney pie. There are even some atypical items like miso duck and calamari Caesar salad. Desserts are good but on the sweet side; the best are the sherry trifle or sticky toffee pudding. Plan some time after dinner to enjoy a pint of good draught beer and perhaps some music from the pianist.
