Kazu Sushi Description:
This is one of those unheralded gems amongst dozens of forgettable sushi bars, as well as a few celebrated venues, along this stretch of Ventura Boulevard. Despite a few tables draped in white linen beneath some artsy photos lining the walls, the place looks like any neighborhood sushi joint. There are even those ubiquitous posters of seafood species mounted behind the sushi bar. But if you sit at that bar and request the omakase (chef's choice), you'll be rewarded with an outstanding selection of mostly traditional sushi and sashimi dishes. A meal might begin with miniature Kumamoto oysters, followed by toro sushi, monkfish liver with ponzu gelée and three kinds of caviar, a creamy blue crab hand roll and seared Kobe beef with a light balsamic reduction. Prices can easily get into the Matsushisa range if you get carried away, but this is one of those delightful places that sushi enthusiasts love to be the first among their friends to discover.
