Passersby would never guess that the corner spot of a nondescript strip mall on Upper State Street is home to one of Santa Barbara's most storied restaurants. Every town has its own version of Harry's, a place where locals rendezvous over absurdly strong cocktails, where power deals go down in the back room and everyone seems to know each other. This is a restaurant where the food plays third fiddle to atmosphere and libations, but if you're looking for local color and have a taste for meat and potatoes (even the famous Harry's Mary is served with a thick wedge of salami), it's a fine choice, matched only by Joe's Café---which Harry Davis used to own before opening this namesake restaurant 40 years ago. To get the most out of the dining experience at Harry's, settle into one of the red leather booths and stick to down-home favorites like the burnt ends sandwich or the jack-and-blue cheeseburger on rye with grilled onions.
