Roy Description:
Known to locals but largely overlooked by the masses of tourists, Roy offers a hip vibe and above average food, not to mention the occasional neighborhood backgammon tournament. Dinner is served until midnight, making the restaurant an anomaly in sleepy Santa Barbara. Dishes are well prepared, but the menu lacks the sort of creativity that otherwise prevails at Roy. Lackluster entrées, such as chicken Marsala with sliced mushrooms, clash with the stylish dining room, which also serves as an art gallery. For something less commonplace, try an appetizer of grilled fennel and seasonal wild mushrooms folded into crêpes---a sweet and creamy red bell pepper sauce lends rich flavor to the dish, and pine nuts add texture contrast. Grilled Harris Ranch steaks highlight the entrées, all of which are served with house-baked wheat bread, soup and an organic salad fresh from the local farmers market. Chef Roy also offers his bread and a selection of five soups at a daily "Soup Kitchen," served during lunch. The wine list---comprised primarily of California labels---offers a nice selection, including a few top-shelf options.
