A family-friendly all-American affair is what's offered at this chic but homey storefront on Santa Monica's relentlessly hip Montana Avenue. The simple blue-and-white eatery, complete with an open-kitchen, is perfect for a casual date (perhaps before or after a show at the nearby Aero Theatre) or a night out with the kids. Blue Plate has a fiercely loyal neighborhood following that includes families, singles and the occasional celebrity. Its menu, incorporating some sophisticated touches by young chef Violet Robles, is a pleasant surprise to newcomers and a comfort to regulars. Breakfast items (e.g. blueberry pancakes, challah french toast, frittatas) are served all day, and lunch and dinner options include everything from Kobe beef hot dogs to potpies to soy-glazed salmon and steaks. Among lighter options are brown rice bowls and a satisfying steak salad with butter lettuce, blue cheese and pickled onions. A small but eclectic wine list complements the fare, and desserts include house-made items as well as cupcakes from Brentwood's SusieCakes.
