2002 Malibu Film Festival, an exhibition of work that showcases the best of independent cinema. The Film Festival programming staff selects approximately 30 feature-length documentary and dramatic films and 30 shorts for presentation to an audience of more than 15,000.

The 2002 Malibu Film Festival includes the following programs, activities, and special events.

Independent Feature Film Competition
The Independent Feature Film Competition gives audiences a first look at a broad selection of documentary and dramatic films by American independent filmmakers. The Competition recognizes the work of some of the best new talent in American independent cinema.

World Cinema
The World Cinema program presents works by innovative international filmmakers. These films reflect the ongoing commitment of the Malibu Film Foundation to support emerging and established independent artists around the globe. A public ballot determines the World Cinema Audience Award winner, and a special jury award honors the work of an outstanding Latin American filmmaker.

Shorts
Exhibited before features or combined in feature-length programs, the short films presented at the Film Festival capture the creative burst that is the essence of independent filmmaking. Short films introduce new talent as they skillfully demonstrate the power of storytelling. A special award is granted to an American film in this category

Malibu at Midnight
The after-hours hot spot of the Film Festival, Malibu at Midnight is a treat for film diehards still wanting more, even after a full day of film viewing. This series brings daring, lively, and adventurous cinema to Festival audiences.

Premieres
To showcase the diversity of contemporary cinema, the Film Festival offers a selection of the latest work from established U.S. and international directors and world premieres of highly anticipated new films.

Panel Discussions
This series brings together film artists, industry representatives, critics, journalists, scholars, and the public for debate and discussion of contemporary film topics.

Opening Night Premiere and Gala
The 2002 Malibu Film Festival opens in Malibu, CA with the premiere of a film by a notable director. The screening is followed by a gala celebration for guests and patrons.

Awards Night
Awards for this year's Malibu Film Festival will be presented during a live ceremony on the evening of August 20. Award-winning films will screen, the final days of the 2002 Malibu Film Festival.
