Crook's Corner Description:
A trendsetting establishment for 25-plus years, Crook's is as lively a scene as ever. On any given night you may see visiting performers and best-selling authors dining beside the regulars. Long before most folks had even heard of New Southern cuisine, Crook's Corner was introducing patrons to shrimp and grits and other updates of the region's traditional repertoire. Bill Smith, who inherited the kitchen from the late Bill Neal, keeps his inventive spirit alive with dishes such as catfish amandine with collards, pan-fried chicken livers in Bourbon brown sauce, and pork shank braised in scuppernong wine. The daily-changing menu may include crisp fried soft-shelled crab with purple slaw or baked red drum with cumin and lime butter. The dining room has something of a citified diner air about it, but the patio, open all year long, is a secluded tropical dreamscape of lush greenery with a whimsical waterfall making it suitable for weddings and other special events. Neal's partner in the place, Gene Hamer, who launched the enterprise in 1982, still oversees its day-to-day operation.
