Cucina Rustica Description:
Cucina Rustica would be the top restaurant anywhere else but in the rarified environs of The Lodge at Vail. Here, however, it is the second-tier option after the more formal Wildflower, serving breakfast year-round and dinner during ski season. But second-tier at The Lodge still equates to first-rate. Cucina Rustica announces its quality with solid Euro-country furnishings, a stone fireplace and fine artworks. The breakfast buffet includes fresh juices, berries and other fruit; a continental-style array of cold cuts, house-made muesli and house-baked breads, rolls and pastries; and hot standards such as sausages and pancakes. At dinnertime in winter, the restaurant morphs into an impressive Italian eatery, with food from the same culinary team responsible for Wildflower. A nightly buffet of antipasti features authentic cheeses (including hand-pulled mozzarella), meats and roasted and pickled vegetables. Among the array of fresh pastas, house-made gnocchi and risottos, we recommend the fusilli with shiitake mushrooms, basil and Parmesan. Typically hearty main dishes including braised and glazed shank of Colorado lamb are aptly accompanied by the primarily Italian wine list. Although the place feels family-friendly, dinner service is not really geared for younger children.
