The living room of this Dupont Circle hotel-inn looks a bit like a showroom at an auction house, but there's more coherence in the dining room, where a regularly changing menu reflects contemporary tastes. Lunch offers several appetizing meat and vegetable sandwiches and light main dishes. If it's offered, try the lamb tenderloin with ricotta gnocchi. Successful dinner main courses have included roast Cornish game hen with pearl tapioca, duck confit with onions and a fig-cherry compote, and striped bass with braised cabbage. Your best bet, however, is the Sunday brunch, when all of DC's young (and not so young) settle down to hot coffee, freshly made sugary doughnuts, and the Sunday paper. Now, that is heaven---thanks to the ministrations of chef Pedro Matamoros. In fine weather, the garden is charming, a wonderful place to enjoy a meal in the sunshine.
