French-trained chef Amy Tornquist has fulfilled a longtime dream in Watts Grocery, opening it in an old grocery building in the neighborhood where she grew up. The renovated space exudes cheerfulness: bright colors; contemporary fixtures; and a lively clientele noshing on her interpretations of traditional Carolina dishes. While the specifics of this menu change with the seasons, you might find bourbon-braised local pork served with a sweet onion custard, pan-fried Carolina flounder with warm black-eyed pea salad, fried chicken gizzards, and rib-eye with pimento cheese topping and buttermilk mashed potatoes. Desserts may include house-made angel food cake with lemon curd and candied lemon peel, and bourbon pecan pie. Tornquist's more creative fare, such as chili-braised short ribs with goat cheese dumplings and sautéed lemony escarole, feature clean, harmonious flavor combinations that allow the quality of the ingredients to shine.
