MI Peru Description:
Grilled, sautéed, battered and boiled, sturdy authentic Peruvian food emerges from this tiny kitchen. The national soup, chupe, is offered here, chock-full of shrimp, potato chunks, cooked eggs and a section of corn on the cob. A filling dish, this lusty soup vies with such dishes as the various potato (papas) appetizers: The traditional papas rellenas come as a scoop of mashed potatoes shaped around a spicy ground meat filling; the whole packet is deep-fried until crispy and golden. Another best: the papas a la huancaina, a platter of sliced cooked potatoes topped with a peppery red sauce, that may be too much for timid palates to handle. Main courses are simple fish, steak or chicken dishes (charcoaled chicken Peruvian-style is a featured item here) dressed up with typical sauces and accompaniments. The bistec a la limena is a familiar beef filet with fries, fried eggs and rice; however, other dishes seem more exotic and mysterious. Dessert choices are limited to flan, the alfajores (traditional cookies with a caramelized filling), and cake.
