Hirozen Gourmet Description:
Who would think they could walk into an unassuming corner restaurant at a Beverly Blvd. strip mall, cram themselves into a seat at the tiny sushi bar and savor a toro foie gras tower? The name on the awning of this Japanese-inspired storefront is Hirozen Gourmet, not Hirozen Sushi, or Hirozen Japanese. That's because, although chef Hiroji employs classic Japanese techniques, he refuses to limit his style and ingredients to those of his homeland. Instead, his cuisine is full of surprises, like the foie gras tower layered with figs and a black bean sauce, or the tofu millefeuille, incorporating layers of firm tofu with sliced baby tomatoes, shitake mushrooms and a tangy ginger sauce. While the specials of the day feature such unheard of combinations, there is also a standard menu of tempura, udon and other, more common, Japanese delights as well as one of the city's finest sushi menus. Changing daily, the sushi and sashimi selection may feature such exotic fare as Icelandic trout, loup de mer and shirotake, a Japanese white mushroom, depending on the season. Desserts are equally creative with specialties including tempura figs and a lightly sweetened pumpkin pudding served in the shell.
