Philippe The Original Description:
The décor of this cavernous landmark---founded in 1908, it's one of the city's oldest eateries---is early fast-food: sawdust on the floors, vintage neon beer signs and high stools along communal tables. People have been lining up at the huge counter to order French dip sandwiches filled with beef, pork or lamb for nearly a century. These signature sandwiches are made with fresh-roasted meats pulled off the bone and layered inside crusty rolls dipped in hot pan juices. We find the lamb especially good---and great when slathered with the house's hot mustard, found in miniature pots on every table. You can order tart lemonade and other drinks, but splurge on wine at this legendary spot as it has one of the best by-the-glass lists in town: from Mi Sueño and Cakebread Chardonnays to Paradigm Merlot and Silver Oak Cabernet, all at reasonable prices. Breakfast features massive portions of french toast and bacon-and-egg combinations, served from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. And despite a price increase (the first in decades), a cup of joe costs only a dime! It's cash only here, but there's an ATM on site in case your wallet's empty.
