The Palm Description:
Part of a national chain, The Palm feels like home to transplanted New Yorkers who yearn for a nostalgic taste of the Big Apple. The original West Coast location in West Hollywood has earned a reputation as an L.A. institution, its walls covered with caricatures of Hollywood celebrities. This branch is located just steps from Staples Center in the once-dreary South Park neighborhood suddenly exploding with high-end condos and lofts. The signature high-backed wood booths, caricature-filled walls and crisp white linens are all found here, amidst vintage columns and chandeliers. The service downtown is a bit more relaxed and attentive than in West Hollywood, and the menu delivers all the usual steakhouse staples, as well as some Italian specialties. The big, juicy steaks are deftly prepared and the three pound-plus lobsters, a Palm specialty, are also popular. Among side dishes, we continue to be addicted to the creamed spinach and fried onion strings (which we forgive for being a bit greasy). A big red wine from California, Bordeaux or Piedmont is the best way to wash it all down, and the list is quite respectable. Cheesecake, flown in from the Bronx, is a good way to finish before being shocked by the bill. That remains our most serious reservation about The Palm---the perfection one expects at these prices is never delivered.
