Yamashiro Description:
Who says this Hollywood landmark, built in 1914 as a replica of a Japanese palace, is strictly for tourists? At least once, every Angeleno should take in the spectacular 180-degree view of their fair city from the extravagant hilltop perch. Stroll through the eight-acre Japanese garden, then sip an exotic cocktail while marveling at the glittering lights. For the longest time, Yamashiro was safely recommended only for cocktails, but in recent years the kitchen's respectable Cal-Asian fare has made it worth sticking around for dinner as well. In addition to sushi and sashimi---including unique rolls like the Darth Vader roll made with black rice---chef Jason Park turns out items like chipotle-citrus lamb chops, sesame-crusted ahi, and Kobe beef rib-eye with Japanese plum-red wine reduction. Desserts continue in a similar vein, including yuzu cheesecake and pistachio ice cream-filled profiteroles.
