This funky Melrose Avenue eatery, just steps from Paramount Studios, draws an eclectic crowd unified by a passion for simple, authentic Italian cuisine. The restaurant, a bona fide osteria, is a casual affair clad in homey wood paneling with a prominent bar and massive Fellini scene overlooking the main dining room. Begin with sautéed calamari or a salad of radicchio, endive, walnuts and apples that is a delicate balance between bitter and sweet. Pasta is made fresh daily, and dishes like tagliatelle boscaiola (cream sauce with mushrooms, peas and ham) or pappardelle fumé (pink sauce with oregano, onions, bacon and scamorza cheese) are standouts. The thin-crusted pizzas are not only notable, but among the very best in town. The Celentano is topped with mozzarella, blue cheese that is not overpowering, pancetta and Parmesan, topped with an egg that oozes indulgent goodness from the center of the pie. The all-Italian wine list is impressive, covering virtually every region of the country, but offers less in terms of value than the menu. For dessert, consider a hefty slice of tiramisu, lightened with a hint of citrus.
