The name of this cheery spot translates as Sacred Heart Pupusa Shop, and a large framed picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is prominently displayed. It's just one of the personal touches that imbue this welcoming little restaurant across the river from New Orleans. In fact, Pupuseria cooks up some of the best Latin American food in the area, and the minimal service doesn't detract from its impact. The house specialty pupusas are filled with minced pork, cheese or both. The tamal de elote is the pupusa's top challenger, a satisfying tamale stuffed with fresh, creamy corn and served with a sauce resembling crème fraîche. The nachos Chihuahua are also noteworthy, as are the fried plantains, rellenos and empanadas.
