Look in the dictionary under old-fashioned neighborhood restaurant and a picture of Perring Place is what you'll find. There's no atmosphere to speak of, just cozy booths, friendly waitresses, well-mixed cocktails, and straightforward cooking. The menu roams judiciously from center-cut pork chops with applesauce to calves liver with onions to broiled rockfish and back again, with a little something for just about any taste in between. The crabcakes are very good, the prime rib is often excellent, and if soft-shell crabs are in season there are none better. The crowd is graying somewhat as the years progress, but this suburban strip mall dweller at the city's edge still packs a crowd on weekend nights.
