China Grill Description:
It's hard to believe that this spin-off of restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow's original Manhattan China Grill is over a dozen years old. Despite the relative infrequency, these days, of A-list celebrity sightings, the vast, vibrant room is still loud, chaotic, and stylistically up-to-date, the bar still bustling into the wee hours. While the eatery's management company does occasionally add carefully-chosen new items, much of the signature cuisine remains intact, for good reason: one glance down a menu that includes wild mushroom pasta with Madeira-saké cream sauce tells you that the dishes' connection to China, or even Asia as a whole, is often minimal. But there's no denying that lobster mashed potatoes are people-pleasers. And while the food here has never been equal to Miami's best establishments, certain dishes do rise to top-tier status, like crisp Thai shrimp with green papaya salad and two tempting cocktail sauces (cucumber-sesame and sweet-sour aïoli), lime/miso-dressed crackling calamari salad, savory-sweet Korean kalbi rib-eye with truffled artichoke-potato hash, or plum and sesame-glazed lamb spareribs. The family-style service (dishes are designed to be shared) also remains the same. The biggest difference between China Grill then and now is the eclectic sushi served in the adjacent, surprisingly sedate Dragon Room.
