Ruth's Chris Steak House Description:
Ruth's Chris' location is situated among the power brokers in central Clayton and comes off as cozy rather than cavernous. It'd be tempting to write it off as an expense-account steakhouse, if not for the New Orleans-style appetizers, sides and desserts that have made it a destination restaurant. A cup of gumbo for an appetizer? Sure, when it shows signs of a properly browned roux, a good balance of flavors and just enough spice to highlight everything but not burn the mouth before what's to follow. That serving is clearly for one, but the gallon of greaseless shoestring potatoes is enough for the entire table. Most other portions also are immense, even by St. Louis standards. Accordingly, so are the prices. The quality of the featured steaks is first-rate, whether or not they're topped with the house's lily-gilding butter. Bread pudding with whiskey sauce is probably the way founder Ruth Fertel made it at home, a simple dessert after a good meal.
