Doris & Ed's Description:
At Doris & Ed's, the seafood is excruciatingly fresh, and the sunset view of the distant Manhattan skyline, beautiful. Small and pretty, the restaurant is sheltered by a Highland's hill and nests on a spit of sand off Sandy Hook Bay. It is so popular during the summer season that a good table can be hard to snag and there are one or two you'd simply rather not have---no matter how good the food. The two-page menu is simple, with no recited specials. One page is called shore today with seafood and international accents; the other lists seafood circa yesteryear, broiled, fried or stuffed. Translation: a traditionalist can order blue point oysters on-the-half-shell while the trendsetter chooses from a list of Atlantic and Pacific boutique oysters. The traditionalist can order Manhattan clam chowder; the trendsetter, carrot-and-ginger soup with a tuna sashimi garnish. Sometimes there is pure magic as with steamed mussels served, one evening, Thai-style in an aromatic broth composed from coconut milk, jalapeƱos, cilantro and sweet onions. Another night, cumin-dusted diver scallops served with Tex-Mex manners, accompanied by fried tortillas and guacamole. The extensive wine list is intriguing with its focus on seafood-friendly California whites. The simplest desserts on the menu are the best. Shortcake with fresh berries is a trip back in time.
