Turkish and Middle Eastern specialities served in a relaxed, no-frills setting. Reservations recommended on weekends.
Samdan's dining room may be traditional, but the extensive menu of Middle Eastern and Turkish fare is exotic. It is always authentic and flavorful, and offered at prices so low that one is tempted to over-order just to sample the interesting dishes. Mezes, the little plates, excel and can easily be collated into a very filling dinner. There's acili ezme, a mixture of hot and spicy, finely chopped vegetables and walnuts; baba ghanouj; tarama, the famous red fish egg spread; and midye dolma, black and shiny mussels stuffed with rice and herbs. And always a basketful of fresh, warm pita is brought to the table as an accompaniment. But fill up on dishes such as these, and there's no room for entrées like the adana kebab---skewers of ground beef, hot and smoky from the charcoal grill---or pirzola, fragrant and meltingly tender broiled baby lamb chops. Granted, it's difficult to manage dessert after consuming a hearty meal here, but don't miss taking at least a bite of the kadayif, a shredded wheat with walnut confection topped with pistachios. The service is helpful and friendly though sometimes overwhelmed by the crowds of patrons who flock here.
