Brigtsen's Description:
From the outside, Brigtsen's could be anyone's neighborhood home. Still-life paintings, quaint and homey murals and lace curtains set the mood in this Riverbend cottage-turned-restaurant. The décor is quite compatible with such signature dishes as the original oysters Rockefeller soup, bursting with spinach and oyster flavors; boned pieces of slow-roasted duck with cornbread dressing and a honey-pecan gravy; or crackle-fresh pan-sautéed soft-shell crabs, when in season, blessed with a meunière sauce. Chef Frank Brigtsen and his wife Marna seem content to reassure customers that south Louisiana cooking is a worthy centuries-old Creole-Acadian tradition, and leave the razzle dazzle approach to others. Consistency is king in this restaurant, no doubt due to the chef's presence whenever the doors are open. The chef is a passionate fisherman, spending many of his free days on the water, and seafood of all kinds gets the royal treatment here. The several fluffy bread puddings and a variety of freshly made ice creams are definitive, be they flavored with banana, lemon, pecan or any other enhancement. Service is breezy and informal, adding to the comforting mix. The small wine list is carefully chosen. Fight the good fight for a table in the intimate, sunny front room.
