Cafe Amelie Description:
The building housing Café Amelie looks like someone's private (and well-manicured) home, but it is really a street-side café. People walking along Royal Street literally stop in their tracks when they pass the open gate leading to the lush courtyard dining area of tropical blossoms, weathered brick and stonework. Café Amelie offers traditional dishes with a twist. The BLT, for example is created with apple wood-smoked bacon and locally grown tomatoes on sourdough bread. The Amelie oysters roasted on the half shell with an aromatic artichoke cream and spinach is the most popular first course. Roast beef is served on ciabatta with a blue cheese cracked black pepper spread. Salmon with a creamy horseradish sauce is among fish offerings but the rack of lamb makes the menu's boldest statement, enhanced with pepper jelly sauce and bits of mango and potent Scotch bonnet peppers. Lunch usually has a few dinnertime appetizers, salads and sandwiches, including a noteworthy muffuletta on ciabatta. The indoor dining room is elegant, but when the weather cooperates the courtyard is the place to be. Children get special attention with tables and chairs appropriately sized for them, but no highchairs.
