Folks know that there might be a wait for a table at this friendly spot. However, the payoff of chef Daniel Smith's seasonally updated menu usually proves that the wait was time well spent. We suggest the beef and portobello kebabs with goat cheese gratin for an appetizer. Southern touches from grits to greens adorn most dishes, and the smoky-tasting gumbo loaded with sausage and goose or fried oysters with rémoulade sauce leave no doubt that this is a New Orleans-centered restaurant. Desserts fly at a somewhat lower, but no less appealing, altitude and the menu always features at least one substantial meatless special. A homey aura is evident throughout the restaurant, from the covered back patio annex with porch swings to the collection of hand-painted plates decorating the dining room to the bargeboard exterior. On the right night, the sound of nearby freight trains and river traffic can complete the spell of rural relaxation in the center of Uptown.
