Gumbo Shop Description:
The Gumbo Shop serves New Orleans cuisine around the corner from Saint Louis Cathedral, half a block away from Jackson Square and within sight of the Mississippi River. The mural-walled dining room and garden patio provide the setting for gumbo, etouffee, jambalaya and similar local fare.
Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more; bus groups are welcome with advance reservations.
Gumbo Shop's toll-free number is 800-55-GUMBO.
Bentwood chairs and checkered tablecloths are clues to the homespun style that has made this French Quarter café so popular with visitors and locals. On this slavishly traditional menu, the single pasta dish stands out like a black-eyed Susan in a vase full of daisies. All the classics are here: shrimp rémoulade, jambalaya, shrimp Creole, red beans, crawfish etouffée, blackened fish and the three authentically thick and earthy-tasting gumbos, one with seafood and okra, another with chicken and andouille sausage and a third made with greens, called gumbo z'herbes, a traditional Lenten version of the dish. The golden patina on the large, charming mural depicting early New Orleans life still casts its spell in the main dining room, bathed in light from the steep windows along St. Peter Street. Service is hospitable and quite efficient, once the dining room is reached. The arrival of tour groups, often in substantial numbers, can lengthen the queue in the side alley leading to the courtyard and main entrance.
