Saturday is belly dancing night at Jamila's, where the traditional Middle Eastern folk art comes to dazzling life at the edge of your table. Proprietors Moncef and Jamila Sbaa often join in with the dancer, spinning around the room while the cadre of regulars claps along. Then the music stops for a spell and everyone gets back to the Tunisian cuisine. The specialties here are couscous (with lamb, chicken or the combination royale) as well as more esoteric dishes, such as chorba (a whole-wheat fish soup with lemons and capers), brik au thon (phyllo stuffed with tuna, potatoes and onions) and grilled merguez. When the belly dancer is off-duty, Jamila's exudes its own quiet charm as a small, pleasant and unpretentious restaurant offering New Orleanians a glimpse into North African comfort food.
