Lilette Description:
Chef John Harris named his modest and charming establishment for the grandmotherly chef in Provence who was a major inspiration in his culinary preparation. Harris consistently dazzles with his powers and range, crafting such straightforward dishes as grilled beets with goat cheese and walnuts and such innovative ones as the warm sizzling shrimp in a vinaigrette scented with Meyer lemon and oregano. A roasted half poussin is as juicy as they come, radiating the tastes of poached garlic, mushrooms and shallots in the reduction of the bird's juices. A deftly grilled paillard of veal is surrounded by a crisp toss of arugula, prosciutto, white beans and olives. Desserts are no laggards, either, with such examples as the warm, caramel-rich tarte Tatin leading the pack. The brief but ambitious wine list includes wines that are as drinkable and reasonably priced as they are obscure. The dining room was fashioned from an old corner pharmacy, and clings tenaciously to the traditional ceramic tile floor. Maroon walls and wide-paned windows are the principal design elements---the properly simple environment for this first-rate cooking. On a cool evening, the side patio is one of the most romantic spots in the city.

Lillette is a super quaint restaurant located in the most bohemian and artsy section of Magazine Street, home to an array of artists, students and old money. It's somewhat small but cosy and inviting. The food is inspired and very good. Recently we had the best rendition of mussels in wine, garlic and saffron broth I have ever had. The grilled beet salad with french cherve and pecans was excellent as was the duck confit salad. The Hangar steak with pesto sauce was exceptional for tenderness and they know how to pepare seafood as well.
They use local food stuffs when available but the menu is more continental than creole/Louisiana. The service is college- girl snippy at times. The wines are bizarre/obscure and did not find them cheap. In fact a $43 cote do rhone was cheaper than the $15.00 a glass for 4.
The food is indeed very good and if you are used to European style service you should be happy.

Disappointing. I took a friend from Atlanta for lunch. She had the broiled shrimp appetizer. The shrimp were overcooked and there were only 5 of them! Anything less than 6 shrimp in New Orleans is just bad manners! I had the salad with veal cheeks and the gnocci. The veal cheeks were the best dish we had and very good. The gnocci was also very good, but again, the portion was about a tablespoon and a half. Go to Clancy's instead.,
