Meauxbar Description:
A flourish of bright, Caribbean yellow on the outside, Art Deco retro-stylish on the inside, Meauxbar can be either an upscale spin on the neighborhood joint serving burgers and pasta and fish 'n' chips, or a casual fine dining destination for traditional French bistro cuisine and some first-rate ice cream. The trout grenobloise is the best of the seafood main dishes. Served whole---sans head and tail---it is dredged in salt and pepper and pan-fried in butter then finished in the oven with a sauce made from more butter, the fruit of a lemon and herbs. The steak frites is another classic, done here with a generous ten-ounce New York strip drizzled with tarragon butter. Coconut shrimp in a spicy red curry helps redeem a dish the chain restaurants have done to death. The appetizers are fine but lack the excitement of the entrées. Meauxbar makes a variety of ice creams and sorbets, including basil, green tea and Belgian chocolate flavors. The wine list is serviceable, though the bar tempts more with its precisely prepared cocktails.
