Ninja Description:
A two story Uptown sushi bar and Japanese restaurant, located out-of-the-way at the end of the Oak Street shopping district, almost right on the river. The dimly lit first floor has a full-service bar and is very bar-like; the sushi bar is located on the second floor which has the wood furnishings, lighting, and decor one would expect at a Japanese-American restaurant. Smoking is not permitted on either floor.
The menu features such Japanese specialties as tempura, teriyaki, donburi, sukiyaki, and soba and udon noodles, and an assortment of delicacies as appetizers. Grilled fish and specialty salads are also available for lunch and dinner. Most meals and sushi orders are accompanied by a small cabbage and seaweed salad, a bowl of rice, and miso soup.
By far the main attraction at Ninja are the sushi and sashimi. The fish for sashimi is generally fresh; specials change daily. In addition to nigiri, Ninja offers many maki-sushi including the house specialty devil rolls and Ninja rolls. Cooked nigiri-sushi, such as egg cake, shrimp, and barbecued eel are available as are vegetable, barbecued yellowtail, and fried-oyster rolls for those who do not eat sashimi.
Dessert offerings include plain, mochi, and tempura ice cream.
An assortment of Japanese and American beers, sakes, and plum wine are available.
Once a tiny, out-of-the-way sushi bar located inside an old frame cottage, Ninja may have lost some of its cottage charm, but the sushi quality remains consistent. Working behind the bar, female chefs turn out above-average sushi and sashimi with topnotch fish and properly done rice. An extra attraction is the dessert of mochi ice cream balls wrapped in rice cake dumplings.
