Is that Dean Martin you hear singing "That's Amore" as you enter this old-school (and we mean that in a very good way) Italian eatery? Indeed it is, as it should be. This is the type of neighborhood restaurant New Orleans loves. In true retro-Italian restaurant tradition, the Sicilian-style tomato sauce approaches purple in its cooked-down richness, and the fettuccine Alfredo takes on gargantuan proportions. Pizzas loaded with fennel-flecked sausage or fried eggplant are the house specialty, while a culinary artifact like brocilone translates here as a stuffed and rolled veal breast loaded with seasoned breadcrumbs and drenched in tomato sauce. Cream sauces cascade from the house specialties, the most formidable of which is a slab of fried eggplant covered with shrimp, crab meat and crawfish. A facelift retained the old-fashioned décor of this Mid-City classic. Be prepared to wait for a table any time you show up, but the bar is a comfortable spot for a frosty brew.
