Grand Isle Restaurant Description:
Situated in the entertainment district around Harrah's Casino, this eatery offers the sort of food found at family-friendly New Orleans neighborhood restaurants, although here it gets a few upscale touches, and is served in a much spiffier setting. Prices have been marked up accordingly. A good place to start is the turtle stew made with oxtails and chewy squiggles of turtle meat. The usual fried seafood platters are straightforward enough, while the fish of the day is an exercise in choosing your own adventure. There are usually three fish options, and the patron decides if each should be grilled or sautéed and what sort of sauce should dress it up. Strangely for a seafood-themed restaurant, the land-based fare offers some of the most appealing eating. The pot roast is fork-tender, thoroughly enhanced by garlic and accompanied by a small pile of the spicy pepper relish "chow chow" to spike it up. Among the short list of po' boys, the best is filled with shredded duck. The restaurant is finished with warm, bare cypress, clean lines, big windows and huge 1930s-era photo prints of nobly weathered fisherman. There is a wine list, but most people drink mugs of draft beer.
