Parkway Bakery & Tavern Description:
Parkway Bakery & Tavern dates to 1922, but it was long-shuttered until a loyal neighborhood denizen, Jay Nix, brought it back to life. Nothing fancy, trendy or contrived is necessary here. The building is simple and rustic, and the food is pure New Orleans. If there is a house signature item, surely it is the flaky, hot roast beef po' boy, fully dressed (lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayo). But choose from about two dozen more selections, including catfish, shrimp, oysters, sausage, ham and more. In the mix is a huge hot dog that is as juicy as they come, and as long as you've come this far south, don't you deserve some sweet potato fries? If you want table service, it's available in the bar. Pay close attention to the local memorabilia and photos on the wall. The story of New Orleans is really all right here.
