Fatty Crab Description:
Zak Pelaccio, who quickly made a name for himself while in the kitchens of Brooklyn's Chickenbone Café and the Meatpacking District's 5 Ninth, brings Fatty Crab to the West Village. Inspired by his time living in Malaysia, Pelaccio has gone from the New York Modern, the globally-inspired New York cuisine he coined at 5 Ninth, to something that's decidedly more insular and narrow in focus. And the results are delicious. Under a pressed-tin ceiling and surrounded by exposed brick walls, hip clientele slurp up Malaysian dishes like nasi lemak (a tender curried chicken thigh and leg, surrounded on the plate by a chorus of flavors---including hard-boiled egg and coconut rice), chicken clay pot (tender chunks of chicken floating in a tasty, thick broth) and fall-off-the-bone short ribs, among other menu items. Pelaccio was only off the mark with the bland fried banana. But maybe that's because everything else made our taste buds zing. Best of all, many dishes are priced around the $12 range.
