Friend of a Farmer has a lot more going for it than the faux-farmhouse décor. The baked goods are uniformly first-rate, and the sandwiches---made with homemade white, wheat or other breads---are terrific. The menu changes with the seasons, as does the selection of pastries, muffins, strudels, cakes and pies (depending on how many hungry Manhattanites arrive before you do). Friend of a Farmer does good french toast at breakfast, and is quite busy with the overflow from the nearby Union Square Greenmarket for weekend brunches.
