La Carne Grill Description:
This kosher steakhouse is a fine choice for dinner near Grand Central. The sprawling space, which covers two floors and seats 195, fills up fast during dinner service. While the sushi is impressive (and indeed kosher) the real draw is the beef. Owner Eddie Allaham (also of Prime Grill) has an on-site aging room, butcher and rabbi to oversee the entire process of preparation and cooking. Appetizers like the sweet, beefy Asian short rib spring rolls and the wafer thin beef carpaccio acquit themselves well enough, but the steaks are sized to satisfy all but the heartiest of appetites, so order sparingly. The Delmonico, not cut from the short loin but from the rib in order to adhere to kosher standards, is topnotch, a thick, tender cut of meat that's nicely seared and arrives beside a tower of mashed potatoes and onion rings. Don't miss the filet mignon, either, which is also taken from the rib so it's kosher, but remains just as delicate a cut as the traditional version. Desserts, though absent butter and cream, are dense but decadent, especially the warm chocolate soufflé.
