Meskerem Description:
There are only a small handful of Ethiopian eateries in New York and this Greenwich Village restaurant is one of the most popular. Which means you should be prepared to wait---and it doesn't help that the waitstaff can often be seen lingering by the bar chatting rather than opening your bottle of wine (BYOB only at this spot). And by the time your food does arrive, you'll surely be ready for the Ethiopian fare Meskerem offers in its crammed subterranean space. The Meskerem platter---a combination of two lentil and garlic dishes and lamb and beef entrées, all deposited on a large injera-covered plate---is a good introduction to the cuisine. (Note: The injera, spongy bread, is used in place of utensils.) So yes, remember that presidential administrations might come and go before you get the bill. Your taste buds will be happy, but your patience will be seriously tried.
