Nobu Fifty Seven Description:
One arrives to David Rockwell's vision of a Midtown Nobu by a dramatic stairway leading from the bar to the dining area and sushi bar. Compared to the TriBeCa original, Nobu 57 is almost twice the size, meaning considerably less intimacy and attentiveness. While the menu still shows Nobu Matsuhisa's creative Peruvian-Japanese gems like black cod with miso, creamy spicy crab, and sashimi salad, these dishes don't seem to sparkle as much as they did when the first Nobu opened. Yet, there are some nice twists here. For lunch, the two bento boxes give a first-rate sampling of some of the chef's signatures---with a few surprises thrown in as well; the soft rib-eye anticucho is a nice touch. Go for broke with the chef's omakase, a lavish affair, or the tender Washu and Wagyu beef options. Lunch and dinner menus are similar and rather exhaustive, although the lunch prices are significantly less. If you allow sufficient time, this can be a choice location for a pre-Carnegie Hall or pre-City Center dinner and you may spot a celebrity or two.
