Rack & Soul Description:
Manhattan really loves its barbecue and soul food, and one of the best spots for it is Morningside Heights' Rack & Soul. In a casual two-room space with red vinyl booths and mismatched chairs, pit master John Wheeler from Mississippi and co-chef Charles Gabriel from Harlem work their saucy talents on tender baby-back ribs (where the meat does really fall off the bone), salmon, and even short ribs smoked over apple wood and laced lightly with a spicy and sweet tomato-based barbecue sauce. Customary sides like collard greens, mac 'n' cheese, coleslaw and baked beans are generously portioned and two selections come with each entrée. Buttery biscuits are fluffy with a light honey glaze, and are a fine complement to Rack & Soul's luscious fried chicken and waffles. Desserts have a similar Southern flair with the pecan pie a sweet treat. Around the room, trophies from various chef barbecue cook-offs and barbecue paraphernalia assure you that this is the real, pit-smoked deal. Have a Jamaican Red Stripe or an Abita beer, a Louisiana microbrew, to wash down the feast.
