Schiller's Liquor Bar Description:
Keith McNally hews to a formula for success. So in the wake of Balthazar, there was Pastis, and after that, Schiller's. It serves as a daytime outpost for writers who enjoy the restaurant's European flair, ample sunlight and unfettered wireless access. The décor is all one would expect from the mind of McNally, from white tile floors that appear to have the right provenance to the pewter bar. During the day, it feels pleasantly relaxing, while at night it transforms into an atmospheric scene that's larded with an amiable mix of hipsters and suits---yet another McNally specialty. The food is well-executed if a little beside the point, ranging from French onion soup and steak frites paired with béarnaise, butter, or green peppercorn sauce to oddities (for a French brasserie, anyway) like Welsh rarebit and lamb meatballs with tomatoes, chickpeas and mint. The kitchen's batting average is higher when it comes to the brasserie fare; the rotisserie chicken remains a favorite. Wines are divided into three categories: cheap, decent and good, a clever conceit, even if the portions are meager, no matter the category. Of special note for early risers: the donuts here are some of the city's best.
