This restaurant brings a new dimension to the Indian restaurant scene on the Upper West Side in New York City. Swagat offers several unique and innovative Indian dishes along with traditional Indian fare. There are many new Tandoori and curry preparations with seafood, chicken, lamb, and vegetables. Swagat successfully utilizes recipes from various regions of India – North, South and the Western Coast. Notable additions in the Tandoori preparations are Jhinga (jumbo shrimp) Samarkand and Jhinga Mast Mast, Chicken Dharanpur and Chicken Bannu Kebab, Ginger Lamb Chops and Lahori Pathar Kebab, and Tandoori Mint Paneer (homemade Indian cottage cheese). In the curries offerings, the “balti�? style of cooking curries with assorted vegetables has been extended to chicken, lamb, and seafood. The well-known preparations like Tikka Masala, Vindaloo, and Saag (spinach) are now available in seafood, chicken and lamb. All entrees are served with rice. In addition to the traditional Indian breads from the Tandoor, a variety of “Tawa�? breads (unleavened thinner breads cooked on a griddle in Indian homes) are also being introduced.
The price range of appetizers is $3.95 - $5.95 and the entrees range from $9.95 to $17.95. The lunch special is $6.95 (a real NY bargain!!), which includes a choice of any entrée (chicken, lamb, vegetable), rice, bread and salad. A weekend brunch is also offered for $12.95 from noon to 5p.m, which includes a choice of any entree (chicken, lamb, vegetable), any choice of appetizer, rice, bread, and salad.
Swagat enjoys the services of Chef Selveradge (Selva) from the world famous DumPukht restaurant in the New Delhi Sheraton Hotel.
Swagat sells 11 varieties of wine by the glass and by the bottle. The wine list includes selections from California, Italy, France, Australia, New Zealand and Germany. A selection of beers including two popular Indian beers is also offered.
The wait staff is very friendly. The ambience is colorful and warm, providing a comfortable atmosphere for neighborhood dining.
