Waiters in formalwear swarm the table immediately offering typical Italian amuse-bouches: tangy tomato bruschetta, rocks of fine Parmigiano-Reggiano, soggy fried zucchini, salame and even an insipid mussel. But the action heats up with the recitation of the daily specials and specialità della casa. Taking their garlicky show on the road----with outposts in Miami, Chicago and Las Vegas among others---brothers Gino and Fernando Masci, originally from the Abruzzo region of Italy, have replicated the original 1982 Greenwich Village décor: plush carpeting, wrought iron chandeliers and tapestries for an old-world ambience sprinkled with a dose of the American dream. Start with the intense porcini-filled raviolis in woodsy cream sauce or go for serious Ligurian penne al pesto. It's impossible to go wrong with the simple spaghetti bolognese but the veal saltimbocca is a true Roman tragedy. Fortunately, the baked salt-crusted Mediterranean branzino rectifies the course of this very expensive ship. A large Italian-focused wine list offers well-laid regional options.
