Fans of tapas-style dining should make a point to try Empire Little Bar Bistro. Throughout Spain, the small plates are usually enjoyed with sherry or other cocktails. At Empire (and its siblings Crackers in Norfolk, Pacifica in Virginia Beach and Six in Hampton), the martini reigns. Tapas can be as simple as olives and cheese cubes or as elaborate as the onion-roasted petite filet mignon and the duck leg confit. Some favorites among the hot side options include a corn-fried crab cake with black beans and chili-lime aïoli, and nicely seasoned Surry sausage and white beans. On the cold side, the edamame are addictive. We also like the tuna sashimi and won ton chips with sweet-and-sour and ponzu sauces. If you prefer a traditional dinner, they'll make an entrée portion of most tapas.
