Painted Lady Description:
From the mid-90s to the mid-2000s, ladies who lunch flocked to this showplace of an eatery comprising two bustled together, turn-of-the-century houses with a warren of dining rooms and marble-adorned fireplaces. Under the entrepreneurial creativity of owners Patty and Bill Hoover, The Painted Lady (named for the architectural term describing garishly painted Victorian homes) flourished. Others managed it, but a new generation---Patty and Bill's four sons with mom and dad consulting---has reclaimed The Painted Lady and given her a facelift in the form of a sleek, anti-frou frou décor with the focus on a changing gallery of artwork. Lunch and tea will still delight those aforementioned ladies, and entrées respect a Southern birthright, but kick things up. Sautéed shrimp takes on a global perspective with a saffron butter sauce. Classic rack of lamb is Dijon rubbed and panko crusted. Even that standard, jumbo lump crab cake, comes with a roasted shallot Dijonaise. It's also a steakhouse, with cuts aged in house for 21 days. All baking is done on premise, whether scones for tea or banana cheesecake for dessert. She may be more hip, but the Lady has retained her sweetness.
