Okay, so maybe they aren't mermaids, just waitresses in aqua skirts and white go-go boots---pseudo mermaids to match the faux under-the-sea motif. This is, after all, International Drive, the epicenter of Central Florida tourism, where you'll find everything from go-cart racing to haute dining. And Salt Island falls somewhere in the middle: too high priced for vacationing families, but just right for conventioneers dining on an expense account who want 17 kinds of martinis, thick steaks and market-priced seafood. Settle in on a wave couch at the Wave Bar or outside at the Sand Bar. More than 250 choices are on the wine list, but they make it simple for novices with an abbreviated list at the top with two to three in a dozen categories, from "Bubbles" to "Worldly Reds" and "Interesting Whites." The menu changes based on what fish is available, but there's always a panoply: oysters, crab, lobster, sea bass, black grouper, tuna, scallops, salmon, snapper, swordfish, wahoo, pompano---the list goes on. Interesting sides come for a price, such as wasabi mashed potatoes and spiced shrimp hush puppies. Giant desserts---banana-pineapple cake, chocolate-chocolate cake---may leave you feeling more like a whale than a mermaid, so skip or share accordingly.
